Our assessment
Compare VPN Plus separately from Proton Free
The paid VPN Plus plan supports ten simultaneous connections and the main desktop and mobile systems. The separate free plan has different limits, so its availability does not make the paid plan or its capabilities free.
Key capabilities
VPN Plus supports ten simultaneous connections, desktop and mobile apps, WireGuard, OpenVPN and compatible routers. Proton Free is a separate limited plan.
Limitations to check
OpenVPN support depends on the platform and the current app lifecycle. Older tutorials are not enough to establish support on a platform where the provider has deprecated the protocol.

Proton VPN privacy and transparency
Proton VPN’s privacy approach includes a no-logs policy and repeated external assessments of the VPN infrastructure. Its 2026 Securitum assessment is the fifth consecutive annual no-logs review. The reviewed scope concerns the handling of VPN activity and identifiable connection records, rather than a claim that every product sold by Proton behaves identically.
That distinction is relevant when using a wider suite of services: a VPN account, an email account and a storage account are different products and workflows. A VPN also does not stop a website recognising a signed-in browser session. Consider the traffic carried by the tunnel separately from the personal information you voluntarily provide to a destination service.
VPN Plus, the Free plan and device coverage
This review compares VPN Plus, with 10 simultaneous connections and apps for the major desktop and mobile systems. Proton’s separate Free plan should be evaluated on its own limits; the existence of a free tier does not make the features or connection allowance of Plus available without payment.
Likewise, a bundle containing several Proton products should not be substituted for the standalone VPN Plus offer when comparing prices. Start with whether the paid VPN tier solves your requirement, and only then decide whether you also need another product. Keeping those decisions separate makes the upfront payment and renewal comparison much easier to interpret.
Protocol lifecycle and selective routing
Proton VPN illustrates why old setup instructions can become misleading. OpenVPN remains covered for macOS and Linux in the current comparison, while its Windows availability is affected by deprecation and its Android and iOS lifecycle has changed. A past tutorial is not enough to establish support in the current app.
The same principle applies to split tunneling: choose the operating system first, then look at the documented scope of its controls. A general platform checkmark confirms that an app exists, not that every routing option is the same. For a work application or local service that must bypass the tunnel, verify that particular use case before committing to a long subscription.
How to compare VPN Plus pricing
The reviewed VPN Plus offer separates a multi-year first term from a later annual renewal. The first-term monthly equivalent spreads the initial total over the included months; it does not mean that Proton charges that amount each month or keeps the introductory reduction at renewal.
Compare a standalone VPN Plus charge with another provider’s standalone VPN tier before adding the price of a broader account bundle. Currency, region and purchase channel can change the offer. If you are moving from Free to Plus, focus on the paid capabilities you actually need rather than assuming that every difference in a bundle is a VPN benefit.
Who should shortlist Proton VPN Plus?
Proton VPN Plus is relevant when you want a paid VPN with a long-running privacy-assurance programme and broad app availability, especially if you are already comfortable distinguishing Proton’s individual products. The 10-device limit gives a clear basis for a household comparison.
Spend extra time on the protocol and operating-system combination if you depend on a manual OpenVPN configuration or selective routing. Those requirements can be more decisive than a small difference in the introductory monthly equivalent. Users whose needs are met by Free should assess that separately rather than paying for Plus solely because the paid tier appears in this comparison.
Plans, first payment and renewal
Introductory offers and renewals are different billing periods. Compare the actual charge and included months, not only an advertised monthly equivalent.
| Plan | First payment | Monthly equivalent | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN Plus — 2 years | USD 83.76First 24 months | USD 3.49Introductory equivalent | USD 83.88Every 12 months |
VPN Plus pricing is kept separate from Proton Free and Proton Unlimited. The direct public pricing-page offer is used; different signup promotions are not mixed into it.

Questions about Proton VPN
How many devices can connect simultaneously?
VPN Plus: 10 simultaneous connections. Proton Free: one.
Is the introductory monthly equivalent the renewal price?
No. It divides the exact first payment by its initial service period. Renewal is shown separately with its own charge and period; an unknown renewal is never inferred from the introductory offer.
Does a supported platform include every feature?
No. Protocols, split tunneling and kill switches can have different platform support. Use the feature descriptions above to check the app you intend to use.
Is this review about Proton VPN Free?
No. The prices and 10-connection allowance here refer to VPN Plus. The Free plan has its own limits and should be assessed separately.
Can I rely on an older Proton OpenVPN tutorial?
Not without checking the current platform support. Protocol availability has changed across some Proton apps, including deprecation and end-of-life changes.
