A permanent free account with unlimited data
Proton VPN Free is an ongoing free tier rather than a short trial of VPN Plus. There is no monthly VPN data allowance to exhaust. The zero price in this comparison therefore does not represent a first-month promotion followed by an automatic paid renewal. Choosing a separate paid upgrade is a different transaction.
Unlimited data is useful when your main requirement is maintaining an encrypted connection without monitoring a quota. It does not establish unlimited speed on every server or guarantee uninterrupted performance. Your local connection, server load and device still affect the experience, and no speed measurements from an authenticated free account are included in this review.
The app chooses the free location
The free network currently covers ten countries, but the app initially chooses the fastest free server for your location. If you request another server, Proton selects it randomly. This is a material difference from choosing a particular country, city or endpoint in a paid plan; a country being present in the network does not guarantee you can select it when needed.
The documented cooldown starts at 45 seconds for the first server change and moves to ten-minute intervals for additional changes. That makes repeated changes unsuitable for a workflow needing predictable location control. If a specific foreign IP address is essential, resolve that requirement before assuming unlimited free data makes this the appropriate plan.
One connection, including when using a router
Free supports one active VPN connection at a time. Installing the applications on several devices does not increase that allowance. A person alternating between a laptop and phone should consider which needs to stay connected, rather than reading the broad operating-system list as permission to connect all of them simultaneously.
Proton does allow Free accounts to download WireGuard configurations for compatible clients and routers. Devices behind one configured router can share that router tunnel, but the router itself uses the account connection. Manual setup requires suitable firmware and careful routing; native-app controls should not be assumed to transfer automatically to an external WireGuard client.
Core security without the full paid feature set
The free apps support Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Core encryption and connection-protection controls are not replaced with a weaker free-only protocol. Current protocol lifecycle restrictions still apply: WireGuard is supported across these platforms, while OpenVPN support varies and older guides should not be treated as a current availability matrix.
Kill-switch or always-on protection is part of the Free offering, with platform-specific implementation. Split tunneling, NetShield, Secure Core and paid streaming and P2P support are separate entitlements. A screenshot showing those names inside the shared app does not establish that a free account can activate them. Check both the platform and account tier.
Useful when quota matters more than endpoint control
Proton VPN Free is relevant for someone wanting continuing VPN access on one connection without a monthly traffic cap. Its main trade-off is control and premium functionality rather than a timed expiry. It is less suitable when you need a particular country on demand, several independent simultaneous sessions or the paid streaming feature set.
The visible limitations should guide the decision without implying that every free VPN is unsafe. This record evaluates the stated Free entitlement, not the paid product under another name.
