See platform support ↓
Premium and Basic are different Hotspot Shield products
Hotspot Shield Premium is the paid subscription covered here. It provides a wider location selection and an ad-free experience compared with Basic. Free-plan limits and advertising can vary by platform, so a free app download should not be treated as a trial of every Premium benefit or as the same subscription.
Hotspot Shield describes a no-browsing-activity-logs approach and uses an encrypted connection to its VPN servers. Those claims are useful policy context, but they do not establish that a signed-in website cannot recognise you. Browser cookies, account identifiers and location permissions still need their own privacy controls alongside a VPN.
10 devices, with current support taking priority
Current Premium support describes a 10-device allowance and notes that the expanded limit applies to new website purchases. Older accounts or purchases through another channel may have different entitlements. Count the devices you intend to keep connected and check the subscription attached to your account rather than relying on an older comparison chart.
Windows, macOS, Android and iOS apps are supported. Current support explicitly lists Linux and routers as unsupported, even though legacy sections of a plan page still mention them. This review follows the current support guidance. Android TV support should not be read as compatibility with every smart TV, console or streaming device.
Hydra, WireGuard and platform-specific bypass controls
Hydra is Hotspot Shield’s proprietary VPN protocol. Current platform documentation also describes WireGuard for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, while some apps offer IKEv2/IPsec. An automatic protocol setting may select an option for you; that does not mean every protocol named in older marketing remains selectable in every app.
Windows and Android document app and website bypass controls, while macOS documents website-based exceptions and routing. These are different forms of split tunneling. The Windows and Android kill-switch descriptions establish traffic blocking when disconnected; macOS automatic reconnection is not treated here as proof of the same blocking behaviour. Practical interruption tests remain necessary.
Read the introductory year and the renewal separately
The official plan page contains a Premium introductory offer of USD 29 for a year, followed by automatic renewal at USD 95.99 per year. The first charge divided by 12 gives an initial monthly equivalent, not a month-to-month payment. The later annual charge is materially different and should be included in a longer-term budget.
The page also contains older embedded offer variants, so this review does not combine their monthly figures, bundles or device limits with the selected offer. The secure checkout could not be independently inspected. Treat the price as an observed public offer and confirm tax, eligibility, cancellation and the final charge before subscribing.
Who should shortlist Hotspot Shield Premium?
Premium can suit someone who wants a familiar app on several desktop and mobile devices and values a choice between Hydra and WireGuard. Its device allowance is useful for an individual with multiple computers and phones. Keep the separate Family subscription and third-party security bundles out of the calculation unless those are the products you actually need.
Consider another service when Linux, router installation or verified identical controls across every operating system are essential. A personal dedicated-IP option has not been established here. Streaming access, connection speed and kill-switch behaviour still require tests on the network and device you will use; this review does not claim measured performance or guaranteed access.
Plans, first payment and renewal
Introductory offers and renewals are different billing periods. Compare the actual charge and included months, not only an advertised monthly equivalent.

- Split tunneling
Windows and Android support app/website bypass. macOS documents website bypass and website routing; this is not identical to application exclusions.

Questions about Hotspot Shield
How many devices can connect simultaneously?
10 simultaneous devices on Premium. Current support notes the 10-device allowance applies to new website purchases; older account entitlements may differ.
Is the introductory monthly equivalent the renewal price?
No. It divides the exact first payment by its initial service period. Renewal is shown separately with its own charge and period; an unknown renewal is never inferred from the introductory offer.
Does a supported platform include every feature?
No. Protocols, split tunneling and kill switches can have different platform support. Use the feature descriptions above to check the app you intend to use.
Does Hotspot Shield Premium currently support Linux or routers?
Current support lists Linux and routers as unsupported. Legacy plan-page references are not used as evidence of current compatibility.
Is the USD29 annual offer also the renewal price?
No. The observed Premium introductory offer is USD29 for 12 months and explicitly renews at USD95.99 per year. Confirm the final offer in checkout.
