An ongoing free tier with defined boundaries
hide.me Free is presented as an ongoing no-cost service rather than a short introductory discount that automatically becomes a paid subscription. The provider says the free service does not require personal registration details and does not fund access through advertising. Those are provider policy statements, not a claim that this review independently inspected its systems.
The practical purchasing distinction is straightforward: staying on Free does not create a paid renewal charge. A Premium upgrade is a separate decision. Review the plan selected inside the application before entering payment details, especially when following a page that presents free downloads alongside longer paid subscription offers.
Use the provider application for the free entitlement
The free service is available through provider applications on the main desktop and mobile platforms. Linux also has a provider command-line client based on WireGuard. A terminal application is a meaningful supported route, but it should not be described as the same graphical experience available on Windows or a phone.
The WireGuard help page explicitly permits free use through these applications while reserving static configuration files for Premium. OpenVPN has a similar distinction: Free can use it inside the provider client, but downloading settings for an independent third-party client requires a paid plan. That boundary matters more than a general protocol checkbox when planning a router deployment.
Confirmed controls do not unlock every paid feature
The Windows application page includes automatic connection protection and selective application routing in its all-plan feature list. The Linux client page separately documents a kill switch. This comparison keeps those confirmed platform scopes and avoids assuming that every setting is identical on every free client simply because the wider provider supports the feature.
Selective routing deliberately sends some traffic outside the VPN, so configure exclusions according to the actual task. Manual router configuration should not be inferred from the paid product directory: free static WireGuard and third-party OpenVPN files are excluded. Likewise, the free plan does not inherit the paid allowance of ten simultaneous connections or its wider location catalogue.
Unlimited data still has location and connection limits
Current dedicated Free and pricing pages state unlimited data, one simultaneous connection and eight free locations. An older general homepage answer still refers to a ten-gigabyte allowance, which conflicts with those more specific pages. This review uses the dedicated current plan description and records that discrepancy rather than combining incompatible limits.
The location help article lists seven countries despite describing eight server locations. Countries and locations are not interchangeable counts, and the available list should be checked in the application. Premium is separately advertised with unrestricted speeds; no numerical free speed guarantee is claimed here. Unlimited data therefore does not establish the performance or location flexibility of the paid service.
A sensible fit for a single-device, flexible-location task
hide.me Free can be useful when one supported device needs an encrypted connection and the available location subset is sufficient. Without a monthly data cap, a user need not ration a small numerical allowance in the same way as with some other free plans. The single-connection restriction still needs to be considered before relying on it across a household.
Its limitations are specific product trade-offs, not grounds for a blanket claim that free VPNs sell customer data. Choose according to the required locations, deployment method and actual connection needs. No speed or streaming results are presented as our own testing. Later verification should examine reconnect behaviour and the intended application without silently substituting Premium capabilities.
Free plan and limits
This continuing free plan has no subscription charge. Check the actual allowance and restrictions before relying on it.
Data allowance: Unlimited VPN data. The free plan allows 1 simultaneous connection and a limited choice of locations.
- 1 simultaneous connection.
- 8 advertised free locations across 7 listed countries.
- Premium provides unrestricted speeds; no numerical free speed guarantee is confirmed.
- Static WireGuard and third-party OpenVPN configuration files require Premium.
The limited locations and single connection may not suit a household or a task requiring a specific location. Unlimited data does not guarantee Premium speeds, and manual router configuration files are excluded.
